OCTOBER INSPIRATION: Exploring Grounding

When I began going to yoga classes, I would often hear my instructors saying things like "ground down" or "find grounding". I would get confused and frustrated. What did that even mean: ground? Was I doing it right?

Webster's Dictionary defines Grounded as mentally and emotionally

stable(adj.), Grounding: to furnish a base or a foundation(verb).

My journey to understanding Grounding took time. What I found, through the guidance of my teachers and my personal yoga practice, was that the meaning of grounding varies from person to person. For myself it became a feeling of physical connection to the earth which was something I had never fully experienced. I learnt that living in a difficult and changing body meant that I had to explore different ways to find foundation and to feel rooted.

I started exploring props in my yoga practice. Blankets, blocks, straps, chairs became tools I used to help me find grounding. Walls became my floors, floors became my walls and I cultivated the concept of "changing the room". Whenever I took a shape of a posture I began to ask myself "am I connected to the earth?" If the answer was No then I changed the shape of the pose or supported it until my answer would change to Yes

Grounding in one way tends to inspire it in others. As I became more in tune with where my grounding was physically I saw positive changes mentally and emotionally.

I found I was becoming more focused and present socially. I also found the confidence to grow in other directions without fear of failure.

Whatever noun, verb or adjective of Ground you choose don't stop in your exploration of it. Remember that just as you are never the same person you were yesterday your roots are evolving as well. You are and always will be a part of this earth. Embrace it and you will find it will embrace you!
